Future meetings in London and Oxford, UK

      The details of the speakers at the ONS annual general meeting on 7 June 2003 are set out below. This is also a reminder about the meeting on 24 May 2003 at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford. Details are given below.

      The annual general meeting is at 1 p.m. at the London Coin Fair at the Holiday Inn Bloomsbury London. Further details about the fair and how to get there are at http://www.simmonsgallery.co.uk

      The talks are:

  1. The Michael Broome lecture - "Arab coins struck by Christian rulers, in Spain, Sicily and Latin States" - Cecile Bresc, Curator of Islamic Coins, British Museum.

  2. The Ken Wiggins lecture - "Tokens in Maharashtra, India in socio-religious perspective." Vrasha Shirgaonkar, Head of the Department of History, R. N. Ruia College, University of Mumbai, India.
      On 24th May, 2003 there will be a one-day seminar organised by the Heberden Coin Room, Ashmolean Museum and the Oriental Numismatic Society 'Coinage and Buddhism.'
      Venue: Headley Lecture Theatre, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. The lecture theatre is located in the basement and access is via stairs through the Ashmolean Shop, to the left of the main entrance. The porter's desk at the main entrance may be contacted for directions.
      Time: We expect to start at 1100 hrs but participants are welcome for coffee at 1030. There will be a lunch break - 'buy your own' system - for which we can go the 'Goose' pub not far from the Museum. We expect to end latest by 1630 hrs.
      Schedule: The provisional schedule is of four papers, titles to be announced later:
  1. Madhuvanti Ghose, department of Eastern Art, Ashmolean Museum - on the Bimaran reliquary
  2. Joe Cribb, Keeper-in-charge, dept. of coins & medals, British Museum - on Buddhist iconography
  3. Michael Willis, Curator, dept. of Oriental antiquities - on Stupa deposits, coins and their significance
  4. Shailendra Bhandare, Heberden Coin Room - on money use in the Jatakas.
